In Chapter 22 of An Affair Before Christmas, Poppy buys a copy of an ancient Greek statue in a curiosity shop. It depicts Eros, or Cupid, in love with Psyche. She buys the statue because of the gorgeous little stone butterfly. . . it’s only later that she realizes that the naked youth kneeling before the butterfly is more interesting than the insect. The statue is a metaphor for Poppy’s relation to the world of Eros, or erotic love. Here’s the statue she buys.
