for The Taming of the Duke

In The Taming of the Duke, Imogen sneaks out of the house to go to a Christmas pant-a-mime with Rafe. Pantamimes were traditional fairy tales made wildly unfamiliar by throwing of custard pies, female impersonators, lurid songs, and audience participation. These two advertisements are from 1871 and 1874. And if you find yourself wondering whether nobility really trifled with pantomimes, here's a picture of Princess Elizabeth and Margaret during a 1941 production of Cinderella at Windsor Castle!
