for Pleasure for Pleasure

Sylvie in Pleasure for Pleasure is tremendously complicated character, a person whose background and childhood shaped her personality in profound ways. Readers have been curious how she and her family escaped the French Revolution, so here's her story. In 1789, the French Revolution hit France. Etienne de la Broderie, the old Comte de Cazaux, was beloved by his people, so they assisted him in fighting off the revolutionaries, and maintaining the old order. The King and Queen of France were executed in 1793, and in 1795 Etienne died. He was succeeded by his son, Jean-Marc de al Broderie. Jean-Marc, Sylvie's father, was young, idealistic, and drawn to the developing power and vision of Napoleon.

In 1797, Jean-Marc moves his family to Paris and becomes finance minister under Napoleon, building a huge personal fortune aside from the land he left in Cazaux. But he grows disenchanted with the corruption and endless wars of Napoleon's court. He begins moving his assets subtly to England after the Treaty of Amiens is declared in 1802. He flees with his daughters, their maids, nurses and tutors, to England in April, 1803, just before war is again declared.
