The fictional Mademoiselle de Maupin, from Six Drawings Illustrating Theophile Gautier's Romance Mademoiselle de Maupin by Aubrey Beardsley, 1898

for Duchess By Night

The sexiest scenes in Duchess by Night happen during Harriet and Jem’s sword fighting lessons. I got the idea while reading Barbara Holland’s Gentlemen’s Blood, a history of sword-fighting. In the 17th century, La Maupin was a principal singer at the French Opéra, and one of her lovers was a famous fencing master who gave her lessons (a detail that sprang to life in Jem’s training lessons). A few years later La Maupin insulted a lady at a ball, and the lady’s gentlemen friends demanded she leave. Instead she challenged them to a duel. She accompanied them outside, skewered them all, shook out her skirts and returned to the dance. By all accounts, La Maupin was utterly gorgeous – and she loved to dress as a man in her spare time!
